This Sunday (November 9, 2014) at St. John’s

We will recount to generations to come
the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the LORD, *
and the wonderful works he has done. Psalm 78:4

Who told you about Jesus Christ?  Someone told you, maybe your parents…maybe a friend… maybe a book…maybe reading the Bible.  Someone “recounted the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the LORD,” to you.  And that person heard it from someone and on and on back 2,000 years!  That’s a lot of people telling other people, isn’t it?

To whom have you told the story?  Maybe you live the story and are an example of the Christian life to others.  Maybe you’ve invited someone to church.  Maybe you’ve actually stood up in front of a group and told your story.  Maybe you’re more of a  one-on-one person.  Maybe you’ve written your story.

Imagine how your life would be if no one had recounted the story of God to you….  Keep finding ways to tell the story so generations to come will know of the wonderful works God has done!

Annual Meeting, Sunday, November 16, with pot luck to follow!

Our Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, November 16.  We will elect new people to Vestry, as well as Delegates to the 2015 Diocesan Convention.  We will pass the 2015 budget.

Who are the Members of St. John’s Church?
According to the Constitutions and Canons of The Episcopal Church, 2012, the following is a definition of a Member in Good Standing.  This is from Title I, Canon 17, Sections 2(a) and 3, (Pg 57):

Sec. 2(a) All members of this Church who have received Holy Communion in this Church at least three times during the preceding year are to be considered communicants of this Church.

Sec. 3. All communicants of this Church who for the previous year have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been faithful in working, praying, and giving for
the spread of the Kingdom of God, are to be considered communicants in good standing.

Weekday Morning Eucharist will be available Wednesday, November 12, 9am, in the Sanctuary. 

Adult Forum: The Adult Forum meets each Sunday at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall. Next Sunday’s session will focus on end-of-life issues.

Sunday School – Godly Play: The Godly Play program for children is offered each Sunday morning at 10:00 am.  All children are invited to participate in this special form of spiritual development.

Addiction and Grace, a service for people affected by addiction, will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday, November 9, 3:00pm.  If you’d like to carpool to this service in Lexington, see Blythe Swinford.

The Second Diocesan Ministry Fair will be held Saturday, November 15 at Emmanuel Church, Winchester, 8:30am – 4:30pm.  Keynote speaker is The Rev. Stuart Hoke, Th.D.  He will speak on the church’s role in addiction recovery.  Cost is $20.  Forms are on the bulletin board and online registration is at www.diolex.org.

Thankoffering Sunday will be November 16.  Please bring your United Thankoffering boxes to church that day.

The Communitywide Thanksgiving Service will be held on Monday, November 17, 7pm, Freedom Point Church of God, 472 N Hwy 1223.

Game Night, Friday, November 21, 6:30-8:30.  Pizza provided.  Bring your favorite drink.  The Young Adults of the church are hosting a game night!  Let Blythe Swinford, TJ or Jason Beams-Jackson, or James Partin know what card and board games you’d like to play!  Everyone is invited!

We will celebrate Native American Heritage Month at our service on Sunday, November 23.  Ken and Shelia Phillips will lead our observance.  We are reminded that the worship of The Episcopal Church is in many languages and traditions each and every week of the year.

Chocolate Fest, Saturday, December 6, 9am – 3pm.  If you can contribute something to the fest, please turn in your donation form by November 23.

Rotary Club of Corbin is collecting 500 new winter coats, especially for boys and girls ages 3-9.  Coats will be distributed at the Empty Stocking Fund party on December 22.  If you’d like to donate a coat, bring it to church and give it to Rebecca.  You can also make a financial contribution to Empty Stocking Fund and give it to Rebecca.

Two furnaces replaced, 1 more to go!  The furnace located in the sacristy and the one in the closet in the parish hall have been replaced.  Thanks so much to all who donated!  Now we need to replace the furnace in the rectory. Cost is just under $1,700 for a furnace that will also be more energy efficient. Donations for the furnace can be put in the box on the table in the parlor.

Kroger Rewards: St. John’s is now registered with the Kroger Community Rewards Program. Please register your Kroger card at http://krogercommunityrewards.com . Our NPO number is 47782.

The Vestry has voted to donate $25 each month to Everlasting Arm Homeless Shelter. If you’d like to contribute, put your donations in the collection box by the guest register or mark your donation and put it in the collection plate.

This Sunday (September 14, 2014) at St. John’s

Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.  Romans 14:10

Seems like we all have opinions and judgments, don’t we?  We judge each other’s behavior.  We judge the weather.  We judge the weather forecaster.  We judge each other’s lifestyle.  Judging is “either/or” thinking.  Something is either good or bad; helpful or hurtful.  Judging is very cut and dried.

One of the first things we learn in school is antonyms or opposites, which teaches us either/or thinking.  The room is either hot or it’s cold.  It can’t be both.  Yet, science has discovered that the room is both.  The first time I read about this, the thinking was labeled “fuzzy logic.”

So, much of the world is both/and.  The room is both hot and cold.  So Paul admonishes us to be very careful in our either/or judgmental thinking.  Only God will judge in the end and we are not God.

Confirmation classes are being held every Wednesday through October 1 from 6:30-8pm.  All are invited.  Next week’s session will be history of the church.  

39 Articles.  The Adult Forum is reviewing and discussing the 39 Articles of Faith, pages 867-876 in the Book of Common Prayer through September 28.

Godly Play offered for children.  All children are invited to participate in this special program of spiritual development.

Godly Play Teachers needed.  Godly Play teachers are needed.  Training is provided.  This is a wonderful program of spiritual development for children and we’d like to keep it going in the parish.  Please let Rebecca know if you are willing to be trained and serve as a teacher for a period of approximately 1 month.

 Computer and Furnace needed!  The furnace located in the sacristy, which heats part of the social hall and hallways must be replaced prior to this winter.  Cost is $2,250 for a furnace that will also be more energy efficient.  We’ll also need to replace two more furnaces over the next two years:  one that heats the parish hall and one that heats the rectory.

 Our computer also needs replaced and $600 will get us a new one plus the needed software.  Donations for these two items can be put in the boxes back on the shelves in the parish hall.

We will celebrate Latino/Latina Heritage Month  at our service on September 28.  If you’d like to read one of the lessons, please see me.  In preparation, you can practice the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish:

Daughters of the King meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4:30pm.  The next meeting is September 17.  If you have special prayer requests or would like to join this prayer ministry, please contact Shelia Phillips. Also, dues are due.  Please see Dura Anne.

Grow Appalachia!  The Vestry has voted to move ahead to become a Grow Appalachia site for 2015.  Please talk to the Vestry about your ideas, questions, and concerns.  The Grow Appalachia website is http://www.berea.edu/grow-appalachia/

The Grow Appalachia Committee will meet after church on Sunday, October 5, to distribute flyers for the October 8 community meeting.

The ECW Annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 10:30am through lunch, Trinity, Covington.  There will be a recognition of Honored Women.  To attend, please contact Lisa Edwards, ledwards102@gmail.com, 859-341-7324.

Bring your pets to church to be blessed on Sunday, October 5.  We will have a service outdoors in our park (or in the amphitheater).  Pets should be leashed and/or in carriers.

Belk Charity Sales Day, Saturday, November 8, 6-10am.  We are selling tickets for $5.00 for this special event.  The church keeps the $5.00 and for each ticket, you receive $5.00 off an item.   We will also sell tickets on Thursday, October 2, 10am – 2pm.  If you can help, please contact June.

This Sunday (August 31) at St. John’s

Search for the LORD and his strength; continually seek his face.  Psalm 105:4

This Sunday, we’ll hear how Moses meets the LORD, the great I AM.  Moses sees a bush that is burning, but is not consumed.  Rather than running away, he’s curious and takes a closer look.  This Psalm encourages us to do the same…to take a closer look…to continually search for the LORD.

We can’t always see God’s movement and actions.  We become busy getting things done.  We become perplexed.  Sometimes, our busyness and our cares drown out the voice of God.  Maybe that’s why God has to show up to Moses in the burning bush.  The Psalm offers an alternative…continually and in all things, search for God…seek God’s face…seek God’s guidance…rely on God’s strength.

Bulletin 08-31-2014

Pow Wow Water Distribution, Saturday, August 31, 10am – 4pm
St. John’s is once again distributing water to guests at the pow-wow at Ken and Shelia Phillip’s place, 4116 Cumberland Falls Highway, Corbin.  Come help us distribute water or help work the gate or come enjoy the music and singing and food.  Cost to enter is $5.00.  Kids Pony Rides & Petting zoo, too.  Pony rides are $3.00 each.  Gates open Saturday at 10am and Sunday at noon.

Rebecca’s Schedule:Rebecca’s schedule is changing.  St. John’s will have Rebecca 50% of her time.  She will spend one week in Corbin and one week at St. Agnes’ House, with every Sunday in Corbin.  Rebecca will be in Corbin Tuesday through Thursday this week.  Her Sabbath days will be Friday and Saturday.  You can get a message to her by calling the church office at 606-528-1659 or priest-in-charge@stjohnscorbin.org.

If you have already been confirmed in another faith tradition and would like to be a member of St. John’s, let Rebecca know, so you can be received into the church.  If you are interested in baptism, also let her know.  Baptisms, receptions, and confirmations will be done when the Bishop visits on October 19.

Daughters of the King Fall Retreat, September 18-20, Cathedral Domain.  Register by September 4.  Registration forms are on the bulletin board by the kitchen.

Columbarium Niche: The Vestry has voted to donate a niche in the Columbarium to the family of Deacon Dane.  A bronze plaque needs to be purchased to mark the niche.  The cost is $208.   If you would like to donate to the cost of this plaque, please let Gay Nell know.

Grow Appalachia!  The Vestry has voted to move ahead to become a Grow Appalachia site for 2015.  Please talk to the Vestry about your ideas, questions, and concerns.  The Grow Appalachia website is http://www.berea.edu/grow-appalachia/

This Sunday (August 24) at St. John’s

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God– what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Do you know what God’s Will is for you in your life?  Isn’t hard to figure that out sometimes.  At times, the way seems so clear.  God’s voice is loud and we know exactly what to do next.  At other times, we feel so confused.  Paul’s letter to the Romans provides a key to our confusion.  We are not to be conformed to this world.  This world’s standards and what our society thinks is important or “the good life” are different from God’s guidance and way of life.

Throughout the Bible, we read of the importance of economic justice, of God’s priority for the poor.  Yet, those are the values our world often presents us.  Trying to buck the trends and priorities created by our broken humanity is hard.  It requires being nonconforming.  It requires a transformation and change in our minds.  That’s what’s required for us to discern what is the will of God, the good, the acceptable and the perfect….

Sunday’s Bulletin

Adult Forum: This summer and early fall, we will discuss a portion of the Gospel of Matthew.   We will follow our Gospel lectionary, discussing the following week’s Gospel – Matthew 8:15-20.

Godly Play classes for children will begin next week, August 31.  We also need adults to conduct these classes, beginning in November.  If you are interested in being trained and conducting the classes for a few weeks to a month, please let Rebecca know.

We will once again be distributing water at the Pow Wow on Ken and Shelia’s property on Saturday, August 30.  If you’d be willing to donate for the water and ice and/or take a shift handing out water, let Rebecca know.

Pot Luck Sunday:  Next Sunday, August 31, is our monthly pot luck.  Bring a dish or drink to share.  And all are welcome!  Plan to fellowship with each other.
