This Sunday at St. John’s…

The Old Testament Lesson This Sunday: Jeremiah 2:4-13

Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

When I was growing up, our water came from a well. We felt very fortunate, because our well was deep and never ran dry. Others in our little village had to re-dig their wells, but not us. That well provided excellent and good tasting water. If it ran dry, we would have a hard time.

Yet in our Old Testament lesson today we hear strong words from Jeremiah. The people forgot all God did for them. They were relying upon themselves. God was the fountain of living water, but the people had forsaken this water and had dug their own wells. The wells were cracked and held no water.

We may not use wells for water that often anymore, but we sure do get to places in our lives where we rely totally upon ourselves. We forget all God has done for us. We think we made our lives happen all by ourselves. We forsake the living water for lives that hold no water….for lives that are cracked and broken.

Come to St. John’s this Sunday. Be with the living water present in the meeting of our community and in our worship together. If you cannot be there (I know it is a holiday weekend), then remember to say a prayer at 11am as we meet. Drink in the fountain of living water…
